If you are a nail polish addict like me, you will probably feel bare or naked with no nail polish on even for a day. This habit often stains the nails, making them look yellow and unhealthy.

Follow these 10 easy ways to get rid of those hideous stains!

1. Stop using dark nail polishes

The strong pigments found in darker colours tend to stain the nails. Try switching up to lighter colours to give your nails time to recuperate.

2. Always use a base coat

If you can’t bear to say goodbye to dark nail polish, you can still have them on but protect your natural nail with a clear base coat. Remember – prevention is better than cure!

3. Use a buffing board to remove the exposed top layer that is stained

Buff away the yellowish layer that is on top of the nail plate. However, do note that over buffing can lead to weaker and thinner nails.

4. Rub your nails with lemon juice or a whole lemon

Rub your nails using lemon or soak your nails in lemon juice to get rid of the yellow stains. Mind the duration, you don’t want your nails or skin to be soaking in the highly acidic fruit for too long. 30 to 60 seconds for each finger should suffice. Afterward, let them sit for 10 to 30 minutes before rinsing them with water.

5. Use whitening toothpaste and a scrub

Toothpaste can whiten your teeth as well as your nails. Apply some whitening toothpaste on your nails and using a scrub, scrub the toothpaste on your nail plate.

6. Dissolve denture cleaning tablets in water and soak

Similar to toothpaste, denture cleaning tablets contains active ingredients that also does the job of whitening your nails. Dissolve the desired amount of tablets in water and soak your fingernails for about 10 to 15 minutes. Dry your nails and put some hand moisturizer to prevent your skin from drying. Repeat the process 3 times a week for one to two months.

7. Whiten with vinegar

The acidic nature of vinegar is useful in removing stains from the nails. Always use white vinegar as other vinegar may stain your nails. Dab the cotton balls in vinegar and rub it on your nails. You can also soak your fingers in diluted vinegar water by mixing one teaspoon of vinegar in a cup of water. Rinse your hands after you are done and apply moisturizer to prevent excessive dryness.

8. Apply tea tree oil to your nails

If the nail discolouration is not caused by your nail polish, you may have nail fungus. Try applying a drop of tea tree oil onto your nail bed and leave it to settle for a few minutes, and then rinse with warm water. Repeat the procedure twice daily for a few months for best results.

9. Scrub with salt

Don’t have a nail buffer at home? No worries, go to the kitchen and grab some salt, it will work just as well! The coarse granular property of salt acts as a natural exfoliant which strips away the stains naturally. With an equal amount of lemon juice, scrub your nails with the mixture for a few minutes and let it sit for 5 more minutes. The stain will be gone while leaving your nails fresh and clean.

10. Go for nail treatment with professional manicurists

If all else fails, why not give your nails a brand new life by undergoing a complete nail treatment? The IBX nail treatment that is used by manicurists fixes damaged, weak and discoloured nails. It helps to create a protective shield for the natural nail and reduces white spots that tend to occur due to frequent gel polish applications.

How it works:
