Each year, the good people at Pantone Colour Institute choose a colour that embodies the trends and cultural mood of the year.
This year, Pantone has chosen the colour Ultra Violet as their colour of the year and describes it as a “provocative and thoughtful purple shade” that symbolises an originality and creativity.
Though this may not be an everyday shade for everyone, here are some interesting ways to work a little of purple into your beauty looks this year.
If you like to keep your beauty look on the natural side, an easy way to experiment with richer vibrant colours is at your next manicure! While Butter London has their own line of Pantone coloured cosmetics and nail lacquers, you can consult your manicurist for any dupes they have on hand.
Vanitee has some expert nail artists that can even work the shade into equally unique designs if you’re looking to up the ante.
There’s so much that can be done with just a little makeup. Try a smokey eye with Colourpop’s purple eyeshadow in “Lace” for a fun night out, a bright purple lip from Fenty Beauty as rocked by Rihanna herself, or get purple lashes with Marc Jacobs’ purple mascara for a subtle yet sassy look that can go from day to night.
If you’ve got an event, dinner or party coming up this year, book a makeup artist on Vanitee who can help you nail a purple beauty look. Pro tip: ask your artist to work a little purple highlighter into your cheeks for an extra special look that compliments the yellow undertones of Asian skin perfectly.

Of course Ultra Violet is already making its rounds as a hair colour of choice this year with its bright but not-yet-neon sheen. To balance this strong colour, go for minimal and modern haircuts to avoid too much fuss going on. Or consult a hair professional on Vanitee for an ombre or balayage hair colour treatment.
Just like the colour represents, trying out new beauty looks is about being creative, adventurous but most importantly, having fun. Throw in some shimmer, change up the shade to suit your skin tone, and if you’re feeling unsure about it, you can always consult a beauty professional at Vanitee!
