A Day in the Life of a Manicurist: Interview with Sharon Low

Ever wondered what it is like to be a manicurist? Well, Vanitee has interviewed the winner of Vanitee Awards 2017 Nails Category, The Nail Gallery by Sharon owner, Sharon Low, to find out how she started her business, her favourite nail designs and what it takes it to be a manicurist!

Why did you choose to become a manicurist?

I love to draw and I enjoy drawing on nails because it is more challenging. I also feel a sense of satisfaction when a customer is happy with the outcome.

What did you do to begin a career in nails?

That was about eleven years ago, when I was pursuing for my Aesthetic International Diploma Course. Within the course, I was taught basic manicure and pedicure. As that was my first time learning manicure and pedicure, I started to fall in love with it and from then on, I started attending different kinds of nail art courses in Singapore and overseas as well. All of that inspired me to start my own nail salon.

How long have you been working as a manicurist?

I have been in this nail industry for about 11 years.

Tell us a little bit more about your salon and what makes it different from others?

As this is my first time starting up a small business, I chose to start up my salon in my own neighbourhood. The difference between my nail salon and the others is that I focus on my customers’ needs and I try my best to let all of my customers enjoy their nail sessions and feel at home. I also treat all my customers like a friend to me.

What are the day-to-day duties of a manicurist?

Apart from the usual manicures and pedicures we have to do, we also have to keep the nail salon clean and make sure the tools we use are well sterilized before using them.

What are some of the inspirations behind the nail art that you do?

I will simply google for nail art images and try to modify the designs from there.

What are three products for nails that you cannot do without, and why?

The three products for nails I can’t do without would be cuticle softener, basecoat and top coat!
The cuticle softener is to soften your cuticles so that it is easier to remove the dead skin on your nails. Basecoat is often applied before the nail polish to prevent your nail from getting discoloured. And lastly, the topcoat is to give your nails the shine and to protect the colour.

What are some of your favourite nail designs that you have done?

My favourite nail designs would have to be the seashell nail art, marble nail art and any cartoon nail art!
