Thai Massage vs Swedish Massage: What’s the difference?

Thai and Swedish are both very different in their techniques and philosophies. Swedish massage is western, while Thai massage is eastern and originates from India. To decide which massage to opt for, it depends on your preference over technique, environment and usage of oils.

Thai massage, also known as “lazy massage,” uses acupuncture points to stretch and loosen muscles in order to provide relief, to stretch and loosen tightened muscles, to release tension and relieve joints.

The Thai massage is based off an ancient system that combines acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic methods, and yoga positions.

A Thai massage leaves you feeling rejuvenated and energized. It uses a technique called blocking and releasing the blood flow. It involves applying pressure to the area where the legs and arms meet at the torso. Once the pressure is released, you will feel heat as the blood rushes back to the limbs.

Procedure

A traditional Thai massage does not use essential oils or lotions. The client is not required to take off his/her clothing, hence privacy is usually not needed during a Thai massage session.

The massage usually takes place on a floor mat, with the client lying on his/her back, stomach and side, as well as to sit.

There is constant body contact between the client and the therapist. The therapist uses her hands, knees, legs, and feet to move the client into a series of yoga-like poses.
