1. Pluck/Tweeze

How is it done?

Removal of unwanted hair by pulling it out with a tweezer from the root.

Pro:

  • Easy to do
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Painful
  • Tedious to remove one hair strand
  • Can cause skin irratation or future ingrowth hair

Verdict:

If you want it cheap and easy, plucking it the way to go. However, keep in mind that it needs to be done regularly (every 2-3 weeks) and can lead to potential problems. Also, it hurts!!

2. Waxing

How is it done?

Apply wax to skin area and remove with or without a cloth

Pros:

  • Relatively affordable
  • Quite long lasting (4-6 weeks)

Cons:

  • Quite painful
  • Messy
  • Can easily cause skin irration or ingrowth hair

Verdict:

We are all over-exposed to movie scenes when a character cries out as the waxing strip on him/her is removed. Personally, I feel that it is not THAT painful. The trick is to not remove the strip bit by bit, but to remove all of it swiftly. The biggest issue with waxing that it can be rough on the skin. If you have sensitive skin, this is not the method for you.

3. Trim/Shape

How is it done?

Using a normal or electronic shaver to trim off the hair.

Pros:

  • Painfree
  • Fast & easy to do
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Very short lived (2-3 days)

Verdict:

The best thing about trimming is that it is a very efficient and painfree procedure. The risk of ingrowth hair by trimming is also lower as compared to waxing or plucking. To prevent this, shave in the direction of hair growth However, trimming requires a lot more maintenance than the 2 above methods.

3. Intense pulled light (IPL) & Laser Hair Removal

How is it done?

Both these method makes use of light energy which is absorbed by hair’s dark pigments. The heat from the light then destroys hair follicle, thus reducing hair growth. IPL uses a spectrum of light, while laser only uses a single wavelength. The latter, thus, produce a more concentrated and powerdul beam. Laser is the far more superior method.

Pros:

  • Can permenantly reduce future hair growth
  • Long lasting (up to 3-4 years)

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Takes up to 12 sessions to remove all hair

Verdict:

If you want to leave all the troubles of hair removal behind, IPL and Laser is for you. The price is quite steep, however, it is worth it if you think about all the hassle you can avoid. If you have the means, go for this.
